In pounds? Divide by 2.2 (e.g. 9 lb โ 4.1 kg).
Use the metabolizable energy (ME) on the bag. If unsure, the dry food average (3,800) is used.
We use the method widely used in veterinary nutrition. First we find the resting energy requirement (RER), the energy a cat needs just to rest: RER = 70 ร body weight (kg)0.75. Multiplying by a factor for age, neuter status and activity gives daily calories, and dividing by your food's calorie density gives grams.
| Life stage | Factor (ร RER) |
|---|---|
| Kitten (under 4 months) | 3.0 |
| Kitten (4โ12 months) | 2.5 |
| Neutered adult | 1.2 |
| Intact adult | 1.4 |
| Low-activity indoor | 1.0 |
| Senior | 1.1 |
The result is a starting point. Cats of the same weight differ in frame and activity, so feed for 2โ4 weeks and adjust based on body condition.
Q. How many treats are OK?
Generally keep treats under 10% of daily calories. That is the "treat limit" above; reduce food by the same amount.
Q. Mixing dry and wet food?
Split the daily calories. If a can of wet food is 80 kcal, calculate dry food for the remaining calories.
Q. Is free feeding OK?
Some cats self-regulate, but indoor cats overeat easily. Measure the daily amount and let them eat from that.
